AT THIS HOUR...ACROSS THE STREET......DECEMBER 2, 1982............

In the Summer 1977, having celebrated her 55th Birthday on July 5th, my mother Josephine Virginia Corey Feusi Powers, was diagnosed with two diseases common to our Corey Family blood line; Diabetes and Leukemia.  Although it slowed my mother down and required medication and monthly blood tests and quarterly doctor appointments, for the most part she retained a fairly decent quality of life for the next five years, watching what she ate and drank, and resting more, but continuing to care for our family, especially my grandparents Mom and Pop Corey, who were in their eighties and nineties at that point.  The first week of July 1982, she turned 60 years old and had her regular quarterly doctor's appointment check-up.  Her doctor told her her condition was stable, to continue taking her meds, blood tests, and following a healthy diet, and scheduled to see her again the first week of October.  In that next three months her condition changed from chronic to terminal, as both the diabtes and leukemia flared up, one and then the other, crescendoing for the following eight weeks, until her death at 9:20 p.m., on December 2, 1982; at Mercy General Hospital, 4001 J Street in East Sacramento.  Thirty years ago tonight at this very time my family and I were there with her when she passed from earthly to eternal life, peacefully and tranquil in the love of God she believed in all her life and with the assurance of faith she practiced so truly from girlhood, to her death bed.  I share all this in loving remembrance of all she was to us her Family, to her Catholic Faith, and to friends, neighbors, and strangers, alike.  Her concern for others and charitable and generous responsiveness to loved ones and others, despite the hardships and economic struggles we faced as a family, compounded in part by my physical disability - was exemplary.  As I have long thought and often said, my Mother was the Best Catholic (Christian) in our Family.  On this her 30th Anniversary in Heaven, I celebrate her life with love and gratitude renewed and remembered, sure the fruits of the 60 years of her earthly existence are Blessing me and others still...Eternal Rest, Light, Peace, and Love, God Grant To You MOTHER............Troy David
