BILL AND RUBY SHEPHERD, JACK PENNINGTON, COME TO OBSERVE HOW TO CONNECT AND DISCONNECT MY PORT IMPLANT ANTIBIOTIC INFUSION PUMP TO THE STATIONARY NEEDLE..........

The substitute home health nurse came to the rectory at 3 p.m., to check my port implant and to show my volunteers Jack, Ruby, and Bill., how to connect the infusion pump line to the port needle in my right chest.  Bill and Ruby will be back just before 8 p.m. tonight to re-start my antibiotic infusion therapy.  fROM 1 - 2 p.m., I had my pt session with Quinn McArthur, in which he had me up and walking with his assistance and the walker in further extended strides and pushing forward follow through, moving the walker, the right foot, right foot, and then the left foot, in two revolutions around the therapy room.  Then he did with me some prosthetic stretching and strengthening exercises.  It was a very good session.  Tonight is at rest, other than Sunday Homily preparation, and finalizing details for Sunday's R.C.I.A. gathering...........A Happy New Year - Rosh Hashanah,  To The Jewish  People,   Fr.  Troy

VISIT FROM ANOTHER HOME HEALTH NURSE PREPARING FOR THE RE-START OF ANTIBIOTIC INFUSION THERAPY. AN INSPECTION APPOINTMENT WITH THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER OVERSEER AND A PHYSICAL THERAPY SESSION...........

My home health nurse Susan Boyle, is away today and the nurse coming in her place this afternoon is questioning whether I qualify for home health nursing, because I have resumed my physical therapy sessions twice weekly with Quinn McArthur, at Swanson-McArthur PT, as of a month ago, when the seven home health therapy I was told I was eligible for ended.  I signed out of home health physical therapy at the end of my seventh session in the rectory, and re-activated with Quinn, at his Madison Avenue -Van Maren Lane location, so there is no double insurance payment, occurring so I am perplexed by why this is any potential problem.  I cannot physically delay my continuation of thorough pt appointments, if I am to resume standing and walking with my prostheses in a relatively short period of time.  If I had not returned to working with Quinn, after my return from my Mayo Clinic Arizona, post kidney transplant evalulation, it is now fifty days since I would have had any physical therapy.  Furthermore, I very much continuing solely with Quinn McArthur, as it is wholistic physical therapy with therapeutic equipment, as well as the standing and walking exercises necessary, in my 60 minute work-outs; whereas the seven home health pt sessions I received were more informationally driven and minimal physical therapy in 50 minute incremeents.  As a result of a mistake by the nursing agency upon my return to the rectory in early July, my home health therapy was delayed unnecessarily for fifteen days, thus setting back the progress I had made in rehab.  Now, I face a further possible disruption, due to this bureaucratic question indicating a lack of understanding on the agency's part.  I will not let my physical therapy with Quinn McArthur and the sure prigress to standing and walking full-time with my prostheses stalled any longer.  If for some twisted reason it causes me to lose my home health nurse once a week, I will have to add another weekly appointment outside the rectory to see a nurse at either Mercy or Sutter.  Simple things made difficult based on a projected expectation versus reality.  There is no double dipping going on, just my personal expectation in regards to my health, to get the best medical treatment, at the best cost, so as to be healed and push forward into my continuing priestly ministry ...........Fr.  Troy

THE DAY AFTER OLOL'S STARTS "THE WORD AMONG US", PARISH SCRIPTURE STUDY - WE COMMEMORATE ST. JEROME, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH; FATHER OF THE BIBLE...........

Having begun our three month Thursday afternoon Scrpture Study Series, based on the October, November, December 2011, publications of, "The Word Among Us", as we seek together to garner greater insight into the Word of God for our lives in the present moment; today we join with the Universal Church in celebrating the stellar saint of the 4th Century of Catholic-Christianity, the Memorial of St. Jerome, Priest of Jesus Christ, and Doctor of the Church.  It is St. Jerome who applying his penchant for biblical scholarship, compiled, authenticated, and produced, in one volume of 73 books, the Sacred Scrpture, the greatest selling book in the history of the world, The Holy Bible.  St. Jerome's scholarly survey of all the known manuscripts to purportedly be considered sacred Word, from both the Hebrew Scriptures, and the Christian Scriptures, chose 46 writings of the Jewish Tradition; and 27 writings of the Christian Tradition, and gathered them together as a comprehensive, canonical, compendium, that forms the Holy Book of God's Word of Divine Revelation to Humankind.  The Old and New Testaments, as the two major parts of the Bible are poularly known, span the 2 Great Covenants God the Almighty has established with the Jewish and Catholic-Christian People of God, as the Living Word of Reconciliation, Redemption, and Relationship, by which we are forgiven our sins and vindicated by the Paschal Mystery and Discipleship.  How is God's Word present in your life today, as you mirror the dedication of St. Jerome to authenticating the power of Sacred Scripture over your daily walk with the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit ?...........May you make God's Word a reality in your life today, by reading, meditating, and pondering on the message of salvation The Divine has for you and me, on this 30th day of September, in the Year of Our Lord 2011,   Fr.  Troy

"THE WORD AMONG US", OCTOBER 2011 ISSUE AND PARISH SCRIPTURE STUDY STARTING TODAY...........

The October 2011 issue, of the biblical meditation booklet, "The Word Among Us", is entitled, "You Are Not Alone - Finding God's Help In Tough Times".  Today. OLOL Parish, is embarking on a three month, Thursday afternoon Scripture Study Series, using the October, November, and December, issues of, "The Word Among Us", as our study resource.  We will open the series today from 1:30-3 p.m., by discussing the thematic introductory commentary by the publisher, Joseph DiFato, Ph.D., 'A God Of Comfort'; and then consider the biblical meditation for this coming Sunday October 2, based on the Second Reading from the Mass of the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Philipians 4:6-9; 'Have no anxiety at all'; followed by reflecting on the passage from Philippians, in light of the the message imparted by the publisher's commentary for October.  The four Thursdays of October, we will follow the same format, but using the other four primary feature articles written for the month, "I Am He Who Comforts You", "How Long O Lord", "You Are Not Alone", and, "Burma Comes To Bowling Green", as our weekly focuses.  Those participating will be asked to pray the daily biblical reflections and Mass propers, during the remainder of the week, and meditate on them in the context of the feature article of the week, and their own life experiences.  Canossian Sister Teresa Norris, will be my back up faciltator, and I am hopeful that a good response on the part of the parishioners will be achieved, as so often I have heard from parishioners through the years, that they welcome a daytime opportunity for bible based, faith formation.  All adults are welcome to join us and share in these weekly sessions.  The cost for the entire series is $3.00, to cover the cost of the monthly booklets for October, November, December...........May We, "Share His Word"...And, "Listen To God",   Fr.  Troy

MY ANTIBIOTIC PORT INFUSION VASCULAR SURGERY GOES WELL AND SEDATION KEEPS ME AT REST FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE DAY...........

Bill Shepherd was his punctual self and we departed OLOL rectory just a quarter to nine o'clock this morning for the Roseville Radiological Center at 1640 East Roseville Parkway, and my 9:30 a.m. check in for my 10 a.m., port implant procedure.  The nursing staff assisting Dr. Larry Cardoza, who did the procedure very proficiently prepped me and we were underway in very timely fashion.  The residual pain from the osteomylitis infection in my lower left back and buttocks area and in my right back from the lamehectomy, on the gurney and the transfer necessary for the procedure was present enough to be preoccupying, until the local anesthesia was administered and fully relaxed me and alleviated it.  The fifteen minutes passed quickly and I was placed in the observation bay for an hour, and napped.  Then given my discharge instructions and having follow-up directions explained by the nurse, she told me they would phone a prescription for Norco pain reliever to Walgreen's on El Camino Avenue and Del Paso Boulevard, called Bill in and discharged me. We picked the prescription up on the way back to the rectory and upon my return, I took my morning and afternoon meds, drank a substantial amount of water, and did as instructed and laid down for the rest of the afternoon.  Arising for dinner, watched some of the evening news and continued resting.  Dr. Martin's medical assistant called to confirm that the port has been place, and I will hear, if not see my home health care nurse Susan tomorrow and arrange delivery of the Vancomyecin.  Susan will connect and disconnect the first few treatments, and other volunteers of mine will observe and see how to make the port connection and disconnection.  Forward to completing this antibiotic infusion therapy, eliminating the remaining pain, and earnestly move forward in beginning to walk with my prosthesis and orthopedic cane...........Fr.  Troy

A VASCULAR SURGERY IMPLANTING OF A PORT TO COMPLETE MY ANTIBIOTIC INFUSION THERAPY...........

Following the 8 a.m. Mass, Bill Shepherd will drive me to Roseville Radiology, at 1640 East Roseville Parkway, to have Dr. Larry Cardoza, a vascular surgeon, put an infusion port into my neck and chest, a more stable means of receiving the antibiotic infusion therapy I need to complete.  It is a procedure taking about fifteen minutes with a local anesthetic applied, at will be done at 10 a.m., with my completion time after observation to be before noon.  I am eager to resume the therapy and be completed with it in a matter of weeks.  The rest of this Wednesday, my day off will be restful, with my need to arrange a ride to Fr. Phelan's Funeral in Grass Valley tomorrow from one of my brother priests...........Fr.  Troy

ST. VINCENT DEPAUL, PRIEST OF CHRIST - RELIGIOUS ORDER FOUNDER, PATRON OF CATHOLIC - CHRISTIAN CHARITIES...........

Vincent DePaul was a very spiritual and holy man who founded a religious order and placed emphasis on seminary formation.  Also a charitable man, one of the highly respected Catholic charity ministries is today know as the St. Vincent DePaul Society.  OLOL Parish has a St. Vincent DePaul Ministry, a conference of parish members, who assist those in need to the best of their ability.  Weekly requests are received, oftentimes in the dozens, for assistance with furniture and clothing.  OLOL SVDP Ministry under the very able leadership of Delores Rhodes Culpepper, does an outstanding job serving those needs, on the limited funds that are available.  Mattresses and Beds, along with some furniture and clothing, they are able to provide to needy parish families. in conjunction with the local SVDP store.  So on this day honoring their founder, we offered the daily Mass this morning for the members of SVDP, and the ministry of charity and service they provide...........Fr.  Troy

OUR WEEK THREE SESSION "UNDERSTANDING THE REVISED MASS TEXTS" FOCUSES ON, 'THE INTRODUCTORY RITES' TONIGHT...........

Interested and conscientious OLOL parishioners will attend the third weekly session of the current 'Faith Seeking Understanding' adult faith formation series, "Understanding The Revised Mass Texts, in the Parish Hall, at 6:30 p.m.  18-24 parishioners have been present the previous two weeks, as we look at the individual components of the Mass in its four parts.  Tonight we will take the Introductory Rites of the Mass under consideration.  As author Father Paul Turner describes the Introductory Rites, included is, "Everything that happens from the moment you stand until you sit down for the first time".  Tonight's six pages of our discussion cover everything but Gloria, which we will take under consideration next week.
The Introductory Rites, as part one of the Mass, has four distinct sections, not counting the Gloria.  The Entrance Chant / Opening Song of the Mass; The Sign of the Cross and the Greeting; The Penitential Act; The Collect / Opening Prayer.  On Sundays, Holydays, and other special occassions it is customary for the congregation gathered to sing a hymn or liturgical song at the beginning of Mass.  Otherwise an Entrance Chant, an antiphon taken from a verse of the Bible is recited / chanted by the people.  The translations of the antiphons have been changed, so they will sound slightly different from before.  The wording of the Greeting and Response, and the Penitential Act, have also changed, as have the prayer endings of the Collect / Opening Prayer.  We will be discussing all this at tonight's  Understanding The Revised Mass Texts, session in OLOL Parish Hall, at 6:30 p.m., at which please God, many more parishioners will be present to ready themselves for the Mass as we will celebrated with the new Roman Missal, 3rd Edition, beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27th...........Fr.  Troy

OLOL'S COMMISSIONING OF CATECHISTS FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION / FAITH FORMATION 2011-2012...........

The Dismissal of our Inquirers, and their first Breaking of the Word, with Sr, Lisa, went very well, as Sister told me they were able to keep on talking about the message of the Scriptures of the day.  I then led them on today's Inquiry topic of, 'Journey Being Lifelong'.  We discussed how our journey changes from the past, through the present, to the future, and can help us see facets of our journey of life and faith differently with the passage of time and  circumstances.  The poetic text of Psalm 139, assuring us of God's presence with us, rounded out the metaphor of making or being on the journey of faith in life.  We sent them home with a timeline to complete and reflection questions, to help them put their own jorneys into further focus, as we prepare to share our own personal stories in coming weeks.  Then at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, after the Homily , I commisioned our Parish Catechists for this current year.  After abrief dialogue interaction with them, after calling them forward to the front of the altar, I extended a Blessing over them, and presented them with their Commissioning Certificates...........Fr.  Troy

26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AND THE R.C.I.A. JOURNEY OF FAITH IN THE CONTEXT OF MORAL DECISION MAKING...........

Continuing to pray for the soul of Rev. Fr. Nicholas Phelan, Pastor Emeritus of St. Patrick's Parish, in Grass Valley, California; who passed away Saturday morning; as this 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time begins, Week 2 of our Rite of Christian Initiation Inquiry proceeds, with our first Breaking of the Word session, after our Inquirers dismissal, following the homily at the 8:30 a.m. Mass.  Sr. Lisa Doty, will be conducting that session, and I will then lead the Inquiry session focused on Faith as a Lfelong Journey.  The theme of today's Sunday Scriptures will guide the Inquirers to  consider Moral Decision Making, as the fruit of God's Word proclaimed at Mass today. Time to go over to the church for the 8:30 a.m. Mass, at which I am presiding.  I will be concelebrating the 10:30 a.m. Mass with Fr. Pius, and Fr. Tony , as we are Commissioning for Parish Cathechists for this Religious Education / Faith Formation, at that Mass...........Fr.  Troy

REVEREND FATHER NICHOLAS PHELAN, REST IN PEACE; PASTOR EMERITUS OF ST. PATRICK'S PARISH, GRASS VALLEY...........

Reverend Father Nicholas Phelan, a native of South Kilkenny, Ireland; a 1952 ordinand of St. Kieran's Seminary, Kilkenny, and 59 years a Priest of Jesus Christ in the Sacramento Diocese, died this morning,  at a Mercy Healthcare center in Oakland.  Father Phelan was a very good priest, devoted to ministering well to the parishioners entrusted to his pastoral care.  He served long stints as Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Maxwell, and then for 20 years as Pastor of St. Patrick's Parish in Grass Valley, where he retired in 1999.  In addition to sharing the St. Kieran's Seminary alumihood with him, and being his brother priest the past two dozen years, two vivid memories with Fr. Nicky stand out in my heart and mind.  The first in 1986-87, when Fr. Phelan, who was then Chairman of the Priests' Personnel Board, who was among those members who recommended me to do my Deacon Year, at St. Joseph's Parish, Auburn.  Thus, he was our neighboring Pastor in Grass Valley.  A close friend and colleague of Father Tony Traynor, my Deacon Year Pastor, meant I saw Fr. Phelan at least once monthly, during that year.  In February 1987, before dinner in the Auburn rectory on a Wednesday evening, after their day off golfing,  Fr. Nick brought up the question of my fast approaching, first parish assignment as a priest, appointment.  A year earlier, I had provided the Personnel Board with their requested list of potential parish assignment preferences.  He quizzed me that night about whether I would consider being assigned to Holy Family Parish, Citrus Heights.  As we discussed it, he made it clear that he thought I would be well fitted to Holy Family, and to working with the Pastor, Msgr. Vito Mistretta, who had been their from the parish's founding, in 1949.  By late March, I had interviwed with Msgr. Mistretta, and before Ordination Day, May 2, I had been appointed Associate Pastor of Holy Family Parish, Citrus Heights.  Thanks in very large measure to Father Phelan.  Then, in 1991, when the Sacramento St. Kieran's alumni hosted, a Seminary Reunion, during Easter Week, with 45 priests and 3 bishops, from trhroughout the United States and Ireland present; Fr. Nick was a quiet, consistent, concrete, contributor, to coordinating and hosting the reunion.  His absolute cooperation, to facilitating the reunion at the Sacramento Hilton Hotel, the venue by the seminary - was stellar.  That was Nicky Phelan.  As a ecclesiatical student and prefect; as a trainer of the hurling team; as a priest, pastor; golfer; friend; colleague; and fellow believer; Nicholas Phelan was always calm and consistent; always there for those in need.  Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.  More soon, on this priest of God, who was a man of great faith and fidelity...........Eternal Rest And Peace Grant Unto Him O Lord - Fraternally In Christ Jesus,  Fr.  Troy

EVEN IN TELEVISION PREMIERE WEEK 2011-2012, REPEATS ARE BROADCAST...........

During the past several seasons the broadcast television networks of ABC, CBS, NBC, in the United States, have all but abandoned fresh, first run, prime-time, programming on Saturday nights, replacing it with reruns of programs that have previously aired earlier in the week.  Network news magazines may be new, but the remainder of Saturday night primetime, is predictably repeats of episodes seen and liked, or missed, earlier that week.  Historically, Saturday night is the lowest night of viewership, and thus ratings, especially in recent decades.  What once was a bonus field of popular programming from, "Sid Caesar's Show of Shows", to the, "Andy Williams Show", "Lawrence Welk",  "Hollywood Palace", "Love Boat", "Fantasy Island";  "The Carol Burnett Show", "All in the Family", "M.A.S.H,, "Mary Tyler Moore Show", and. "Bob Newhart Show", have all aired on Saturday nights, to big viewership, and large ratings, on all three broadcast networks.  But with fewer than ever viewers and ratings, the onslaught of cable, satellite, dvd, video, and internet, alternatives for home viewing, thus a substantial decline in adverstising revenu;, repeat programming has for the most part, become, the Saturday night,  television network norm.  And this week, for the first time in this television fan's avid memory, that practice has been extended to Friday night, as well.  Last night, on ABC, CBS, and NBC, only one of the three broadcast networks, CBS, aired a full three hours of premiere and season priemeres programming, with the new series, "A Gifted Man", and new season starts of, "CSI:NY", and "Blue Bloods", being broadcast.  ABC, reaired Wednesday night's one hour season premiere of it's third season, multiple Emmy winning, comedy series, "Modern Family", and Wednesday night's premiere. of the new drama, "Revenge".  Only the last hour of primetime's programming, a new edition of ABC News 20-20, their fabled thirty three year, newsmagazine, was fresh ABC programming.  This from the network with previous year hits such as, Gillette's Friday Night Fights", "The Flintstones", "The Brady Bunch", and "The Partridge Family",  in the 1950's '60's, and '70's.  NBC, repeated the new comedies "Up All Night", and "Whitney", even though "Up All Night", had already aired twice this week, on Sunday after NFL Football, and in its scheduled slot, on Wednesday night.  "Whitney'', premiered on Thursday night, so was being aired again, just one night later.  That hour of repeats, was followed by a two hour, fresh offering, of, "Dateline - NBC", another newsmagazine show.  NBC in the 1960's and '70's aired such as, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", and, "Sanford And Son", both which succeeded in bringing down their pop culure favorites, other network competitors, "The Milton Berle Show", and, "The Brady Bunch".  As a television fan, and as someone who presently is inordinately housebound, it is sad to know that two nights of primetime television are now altered from pure first run to rerun, nights.  This means CBS will get my Friday night viewership, maintaining it's 1970's and '80's Friday night supremacy, when they aired, "Dallas", and, "Falcon Crest", in primetime...........Fr.  Troy

FIRST FRIDAY OF FALL '11 FULL OF FAITH FORMATION PREPARATION AND CERTIFICATES SIGNING...........

Parish Secretary Frances Hood, returned from a week's vacation with her brothers and sisters in Oregon, and I had three sacramental certificate requests one for Marriage, and two for Baptisms, awaiting her; along with three new parish registrations to be processed.  In mid morning Sr. Lisa, had a meeting to discuss further her participation as a member of the R.C.I.A. Team Ministry.  She will be leading the Breaking of the Word session with our 5 Inquirers on Sunday morning following their Dismissal from the 8:30 a.m. Mass.  I will be presiding at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, and will then join them in the Green Room, at 9:40 a.m. for our weekly Inquiry session, as we explore the Journey of life and faith.  Sr. Felicity appeared in the early afternoon with the parish catechists Commissioning certificates, which they will be presented with at Sunday's 10:30 a.m. Mass.  I also spent some of the day organizing the first gathering of the Parish Scripture Study Series, based on the biblical meditation publication, "The Word Among Us", which starts next Thursday afternoon.    Today was rounded out by telephone calls from my home health nurse, Susan Boyle, and Dr. Martin's medical assistant, Gina, regarding placement of my antibiotic infusion port, which the doctor has ordered and will be scheduled for surgical implant soon.  I should hear confirmation of the date and time early next week.  Looking forward to a restful and pain lessening evening into night...........Fr.  Troy

THE TAMAKI SISTERS OF SOUTH SACRAMENTO SHARE THEIR STORY OF WORLD WAR II INTERNMENT, CONVERSION TO THE CATHOLIC FAITH, AND HOW THEIR EXPERIENCES HAVE AFFECTED THEIR LIVES...........

The 'Catholic Herald' magazine, September/October 2011, issue has included among it's several feature stories, a wonderful story by Editor Julie Sly, about Jean and Lil Tamaki, Japanese American sisters who who like myself are South Sacramentans and sixty six year parishioners of St. Rose's Parish, on Franklin Boulevard.  They profoundly, poignantly, but positively, share their story, as children, who with their parents, and thousands of other Japanese Americans, were interned in a Tulelake, California camp, set up to remove the Japanese, including native born, Japanese Americans from their homes and the general society, following the controversial, if not unconstitutional, decision to move against them, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941.  It was an experience Jean and Lil Tamaki acknowledge, meant, "their lives would be forever changed".  From their temporary housing at Camp Walerga, in North Highlands, Sacramernto County, which was located not far from I am blogging, in east Del Paso Heights, where the Tamaki sisters met Rev. Msgr. Thomas Kirby, priest secretary to Bishop Robert Armstrong, and Chancellor of the Sacramento Diocese; and the Franciscan Sisters of Penance and Charity, and they discovered the Catholic Faith.  Jean says, "You know God brings good out of evil"....."This is so true for us.  If it hadn't been for the war, we just wonder if we would have been introduced to the Catholic Church and our faith, because we didn't know any Catholics at this time and we certainly didn't know anything about the faith".  Throughout my lifetime my family and I, can testify to the fruitfulness of Catholic-Christian Faith, by which Lil and Jean, fervently live.  Having seen and come to know them from my boyhood as an altar server, lector, eucharistic minister, catechist, and youth minister, at St. Rose's their weekly presence and participation at Mass, and in interaction with other parishioners has always been, and is stellar.  Their ministries and work on behalf of the parish and the diocese, are yeoman examples of Discipleship.  Like so many people, bishops, priests, religious, laity, co-workers, fellow parishioners, neighbors, and personal friends, my life continues to be enriched with their friendship, faith, fellowship, and hospitality.  I am pleased to count them in the vanguard of my dearest South Sacramento friends.  At my First Mass as a Priest of Jesus Christ, on Sunday May 3, 1987, I asked Jean to open the Liturgy, with an Introduction of Welcome, to those who were present.  As ever, she made an awesome presentation, that I continue to cherish, on the videotape of that Mass.  She and Lil were both an integral part of that day as the women and men of St. Rose's / St. Patrick's helped with the Luncheon Reception that followed the Mass.  As I round the corner to my Silver Jubilee, next May, I look forward to again sharing with them, and my cherished circle of South Sacramento, diocesan, national, and international friends, their part in my life, priestly ministry, challenges, and struggles.  One last quote from the, 'Catholic Herald' magazine sory, "God Brings Good Out Of Evil", summarizes more than sufficiently, the Tamaki sisters philosophy and theology of life.  "We felt good about being Catholic.....We didn't have a big battle of conscience.  We felt God just called us and we just followed".  That is the attitude and action of Catholic-Christian Discipleship, all of us would be wise to envelop...........With Love, Prayers, And Heartfelt Appreciation, For Their Affect On My Life,   Fr.  Troy

MEETING WITH THE CONFIRMATION CLASS AND "ASK FATHER TROY", GOES WELL...........

My visit with OLOL's 8th Grade Confirmation Class last night, went very well.  Canossian Sister Lisa Doty, had them gather in the church as they arrived for a period of quiet prayer.  With the only the church sanctuary lighted and the natural temperature of the edifice without air conditioning on; provided for a quiet and reflective atmosphere.  Sister Lisa opened the night's session with them in the church praying an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and an Invocation of the Holy Spirit.  She then had them listen to the Sunday Scriptures for September 25, reading the Old and New Testament Readings, and reciting the Responsorial Psalm, and Alleluia Verse, to their response.  Sister then asked me to read the Gospel.  Following, she briefly instructed them in the meaning of the Gospel story.  Then we went into the Parish Hall, where she invited me to address the students and to take their questions.  An interesting exchange it was with first questions concentrated on my age, and what happened that I am in a wheelchair presently.  Sister then asked me to share briefly how I chose to become a priest.  She concluded by introducing Fr. Pius.  A very good first visit the the 9 students, up one from last week - 6 girls; 3 boys; with Sr. Felicity telling me two more brothers are expected to join the class next week...........Come Holy Spirit, Come !!! And Open The Hearts And Minds Of Our Students To Your Gifts And Fruits,   Fr.  Troy

This last day of Summer 2011, is going out in the 90's Fahrenheit, in Sacramento, CA, USA.  Today's high temperature was 96 degrees, to officially conclude the summer season.  The forecast for the first day of Autumn tomorrow in Sacramento - is an even higher, 98 degrees.  The good ol' summer-time, becomes the so called,  extended indian summer-time tomorrow.  I am happy to partake of the warmer weather, with the expectation that as my therapy and physical healing permits, I will be able to enjoy more of it outdoors, beyond the four walls of rectory, church, and parish hall..............Fr. WITH OLOL'S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION / FAITH FORMATION UNDERWAY FOR THEIR SECOND WEEK, I VISIT THE 8TH GRADE CONFIRMATION CLASS TONIGHT...........

Sister Felicity Brusadelli, and I, again this morning to discuss Parish Religious Education ministry matters, and the 8th Grade Confirmation Class.  Sister Lisa Doty, our newest Canossian arrival this spring, will be the Confirmation Class teacher this year.  There are 8 students enrolled, with the hope for more.  I will be visiting with them tonight, for a brief, start of the year meet and greet, session.  I have done that, not only as a priest for nearly twenty five years, but going back to 1976, when as a college student, I began catechesizing Confirmation students, co-teaching tghem with Msgr. Edward J. Kavanagh, at St. Rose's CCD, in South Sacramento.  One of the features of my pastoral ministry, priestly ministry, through the years, is provide all parish students over the years with the opportunity to interact, about what they are thinking or wondering about.  I title it, "Ask Father Troy" ?   It allows us to break the ice, and to hear from them, by addressing the very questions they have about Faith and Life.  I will offer them that renewed opportunity tonight, with the hope our dialogue can begin and proceed, as priest and people, pastor and parishioners, on the journey of faith together...........Fr.  Troy

WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER WATCHING ON SEPTEMBER 21ST, 1948...1957...1968...1970...1993...1998... ??????...........

As the 2011-2012, Television Season continues to premiere this week, the network premieres of, "The X Factor", on FOX;  "Up All Night", on NBC;  "Revenge", on ABC, among other premieres and season premieres, are the 2011 occurrence of this night in television history over the past sixty three years.  Also on this date, beloved, hit, shows have premiered in years past.  Going back to 1948, when Milton Berle premiered as Host of the, "Texaco Star Theatre", variety show, on NBC; that went on to become the, "Milton Berle Show".  On September 21, 1957, Raymond Burr and cast, started a nine season run, with the premiere of , "Perry Mason", on CBS.  Or in 1968, when the Jack Webb, half hour police drama, "Adam 12", premiered on NBC; starring Martin Milner and Kent McCord.  In 1970, on ABC-TV, American viewers watched the premiere broadcast, of, "Monday Night Football"; with the trio of Howard Cossell, "Dandy" Don Meredith, and Frank Gifford, providing the color commentary.   And September 21st, in the 1990's brought two more memorable television premieres - "NYPD Blue", in 1993, on ABC; and, "Will and Grace", in 1998, on NBC.  These six television series premieres led to highly successful, multiple seasons, viewership, that have gained them a firmament in the dominions of tv-land.  Whether the three new television series mentioned above, that are making their series premieres tonight, will join the annals of the other six series, that went on to television gold, only the weeks ahead will determine.  Network television with stiffer than ever competition from cable, satellite, internet, and dvd, alternatives possess a narrower window for success, as the offerings for broadcast or video, evening's entertainment increases...........Fr.  Troy

ST. MATTHEW UNDERSCORES OUR DISCIPLESHIP IN CHRIST IS COUNTERCULTURAL...........

.....As my Wednesday opens, I still stand in need of a ride to my Thursday physical therapy appointment tomorrow at 1 p.m., on Madison Avenue and Van Maren.  Anyone who is available to take me to and from the appointment I would appreciate hearing from right away.....

St. Matthew, the tax collector, who called by Jesus, became one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, and Four Evangelists of the Gospel, teaches us as followers of Jesus the Christ, that to be called and chosen for Discipleship is a countercultural sign of conventional wisdom.  As a tax collector, Levi, who becomes Matthew, was not a popular person.  Tax collectors were despised, thus by being chosen by Jesus as one of His primary Disciples, was underscoring that Discipleship goes against the grain.  All are welcome to embrace the way of life Jesus proclaims to be the way to God's Kingdom.  Sinners, as well as the Righteous, are called and challenged to the Salvation attained for Humankind by the long awaited  Messiah of God's People.  Matthew's Gospel is written with a decided focus on the Messiahship of Jesus Christ, to provide the Jewish People, as well as Christians, with a confirming insight that Jesus, is the one who is prophetically proclaimed and anticipated through the ages, as the "Messiah", in Aramic; and the "Christ", in Greek; the, "Anointed", of God to be the Redeemer of the World, and the Reconciler between the Divine and Humankind.  My thoughts and prayers are with the one former tax collector, I know personally, my St. Kieran's seminary classmate and hallway mate, Liam Campbell, from Donegal and Derry, in Ireland.  After completing secondary school, Liam worked for a few years in Dublin, in tax collection.....May all of us who are Jesus' Disciples appreciate the countercultural witnesses to the Gospel we are, and affirm who we are, and why we believe in, and follow Jesus the Christ, day, by day, by day...........As We Answer The Call To Follow The Messiah Wh Is Christ The Lord,   Fr.  Troy

QUINN MCARTHUR PUTS ME THROUGH ANOTHER INTENSE PHYSICAL THERAPY SESSION...........

My home health care nurse, Susan Boyle, R.N., visited me this morning in the rectory.  She and Dr. Martin's medical assistant Gina, have informed me that Dr. Martin is considering having a port placed in my chest, for completion of the antibiotic infusion therapy.  This afternoon, I had my first of this week's two physical therapy sessions with Quinn McArthur, P.T., O.C.S., which was a thorough walkabout the therapy room, three times around, with my orthopedic cane and his assistance; ninety feet in total.  That it an increase from last Tuesday, my initial effort which was only ten feet in distance.  Quinn and his assistants repeatedly told me I will sleep well tonight.  I feel that starting to take hold as it is 9:25 p.m., and I am nodding off in front of Dancing With The Stars, Results Show.  I agree with Donny Osmond's championship expertise viewpoint, Ron Artest, hands down should be the first to be sent tonight...........Fr.  Troy

SIMULTANEOUS DEATHS IN THREE PROMINENT AMERICAN POLITICAL FAMILIES...........

The Sunday obituaries included news that Charles Percy, Kara Kennedy, and Eleanor Mondale, have died.  All three were from prominent American political familes.  Charles Percy, a highly successful and charismatic, chief executive of the Bell and Howell Camera Company, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1966, and served three terms as a moderate, to liberal, Republican, in the mode of the late Vice President of the United States, Nelson Rockefeller.  Narrowly defeated for re-election in 1984, the potential he possessed, that some thought might take him to the White House, never materialized.  His daughter, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, is the president and chief executive, of  WETA / NPR, in Washington, and is the wife of West Virginia U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller.  Former Senator Percy, died of Alzheimer's Disease, at age 91.  Kara Kennedy, oldest daughter of the late U.S. Senator Edward 'Ted' Kennedy,, and Joan Bennett Kennedy, died suddenly Friday at age 51, of a heart attack after completing a health club workout in the Washington, D.C., area.  She was a professional filmmaker, and contnues the string of two generations of Kennedys, who met early, or mid age deaths, in her dynastic political family.  Also only 51, Eleanor Mondale, daughter of former Vice President and Mrs. Walter and Joan Mondale, succumbed to her bout with  the recurrence of a brain tumor, at her home in Minnesota on Saturday.  She became an entertainment reporter, and radio talk show host, in Minneapolis, but had been off the air, since March 19, 2009, when she announced her brain tumor had returned.  As I blog about these passings in the 11 o'clock hour on this Monday night, news headlines, are reporting the passing away of Delores Hope at age 102, the wife of the late, great, acclaimed comedian superstar, Bob Hope.  More on her in a blog column tomorrow.  Charles Percy, Kara Kennedy, Eleanor Mondale, Delores Hope, - May they Rest in Peace...........Fr.  Troy

FAITH SEEKING UNDERSTANDING AND THE NEW MASS TEXTS CLASS TONIGHT...........

I have spent much of the afternoon finishing up preparation for Week Two's session of the Faith Seeking Understanding adult faith formation series, "Understanding The Revised Mass Texts".  Tonight the parishioners present and I, will discuss the opening pages of Father Paul's Turner's, book by that title, five pages captioned, Why and How Have The Mass Texts Been Revised ?  I think they will agree he has done an excellent job of introducing and explaining the reasoning; describing it as, "New Words...Deeper Meaning, Same Mass".  These pages of our text also address the revisions in the Mass, taking effect on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, based on their Biblical Roots, Faithfulness to the Latin, and the Poetic Texts, they produce.  Father Turner who writes, insightfylly, "The Book we are getting, is Better than the Book we have had".  He admits, "Some changes are smaller than others", and that there is concern on the part of the some Americans about changes in the English wording of the Revised Roman Missal 3rd Edition.  The author also gives a very good overview of, ICEL; the International Commission on English in the Liturgy, the primary drafters of the English translation.  I am hoping even more than the 24 who attended last week, will be present tonight, as we journey forward in preparing for the Revised Roman Missal 3rd Edition...........Fr.  Troy

"DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME", IS THE THEME OF CATECHETICAL SUNDAY 2011...........

On this third Sunday of September, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time liturgically; we mark 'Catechetical Sunday', the day each year we acknowledge and affirm the essential nature of religious education and faith formation, in lives of our parish communities.  We recognize the roles and responsibilities of our catechists, who teach our children and adults, the Catholic-Christianity, we profess and practice, as members of the Community of Believers.  The theme chosen by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, to celebrate this 2011 Catechetical Sunday, are words directly out of the Institutional Narrative of Sacred Scripture and the Eucharistic Prayers of the Church, as spoken by Jesus the Christ at the Lat Supper, "Do This In Memory Of Me".  As the young people and adults in your community of believers gather today or during the week, for Religious Education classes, R.C.I.A., the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Scripture Study, or other forms of Adult Faith Formation and Family Catechesis, may what they do in exploring and imparting the Faith, honor Jesus proclamation, and do it in His memory, for the greater Glory of God, and the Common Good, of All in the Community of Believers, in Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Redeemer...........Fr.  Troy

FEAST OF THE TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS...........

In today's liturgical celebration, we lift high the Cross, which to the world is a sign of defeat and derision. Used in the days of the Roman Empire, as a method of execution for common criminals, for  Jesus the Christ, the co-eternal Son of God, to be put to death by means of crucifixion, was an intentional mockery  of His Divinity and Redeeming Mission.  What was supposedly the tree of defeat bringing about the death of Jesus, became the instrument of salvation, as the sacrifice of Christ, vanquishes the power of sin and death over humankind.  The triumph and victory of the Cross is for Catholic-Christians a sign of joy and gladness, as we marvel at what God in Christ was able to attain for us, in the reconciliation of Humankind and the Divine, and the exaltation the Savior of the World and the King of the Universe, along with his fervent followers will share forever in God's Eternal Kingdom...........Fr.  Trou

FORMER FIRST LADY JACQUELINE BOUVIER KENNEDY ONASASIS IN EIGHT AND A HALF HOURS OF AUDIO TAPES...........

Fifty years after the Inauguration of the 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, his daughtther Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, has released eight and a half hours of audio tapes of her mother, the late former First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onasasis, an intriguing insight into the lives they led together and her thoughts and feelings about a myriad of topics, including candid and unvarnished opinions about others.  She is heard on the tapes as being disparaging of her husband's successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson, aq man she is said to have had affection for, as even greater esteem for his wife, former First Lady, Claudia Alta "LadyBird" Taylor Johnson.  Caroline Kennedy in an interview with ABC News anchor, Diane Sawyer who hosted a two hour special tonight, highlighting the tapes, said she decided to go public with these audio tapes now, seventeen and a half years after her mother's death, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Kennedy Administration.  Tonight's ABC News 'Nightline', and tomorrow's ABC News 'Good Morning America', will feature further sharing of the audiotapes and interviews with Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.  Like the audiotapes of President Lyndon Johnson, which were released a couple of years ago, these tapes bring historians, presidential scholars,. ands citizens of our nation and the world, further direct insight and information from a direct participant and source at the fulcrum of that pivotal time in American History...........Fr.  Troy

24 ATTEND FIRST SESSION OF OLOL's "UNDERSTANDING THE NEW MASS TEXTS", OF THE REVISED ROMAN MISSAL 3RD EDITION - FSU SERIES...........

Two dozen members of OLOL Parish turned out tonight for the first session of the ten week series, "Understanding The New Mass Texts", of the Revised Roman Missal 3rd Edition, which becomes the official chief liturgical book for the celebration of Masses, effective November 27, 2011.  The introductory session was an overview of the reasons behind the changes we will be experiencing and a first look at the booklet from Liturgical Training Publications, (LTP) written by Father Paul Turner, a priest of the Diocese of Kansas City / St. Joseph, USA, who holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from a Roman university, and is a facillator for ICEL, the International Commission for English in the Liturgy, who translated the New Roman Missal 3rd Edition, from Latin, the universal language in which all Catholioc Church documents are originally published; into English.  At the heart of tonight's discussion being the distnction between, "dynamic equivalency", in translating texts, which is focused on emphasizing the, Meaning of the words translated; versus, "formal equivalency", which translates the words with a focus on the, Word for Word, translation of the texts.  Formal Equivalecy was used in translating the 3rd Edition of the Revised Roman Missal.  A very good start, to what will be a solid preparation for committed parishioners of OLOL, who want to better understand how and why, the  changes are being made in our  celebration of the ultimate act of Divine Worship, the Catholic Mass...........In The Spirit Of Faith Seeking Understanding,   Fr.  Troy

CONCELEBRATION, CONVERSATION, AND CONVIVIALITY, ON THIS 9 - 11 10TH ANNIVERSARY DAY...........

Father Tony Traynor concelebrated the 8:30 a.m. Mass this morning, at which I presided, prayed, and preached, on the beginning of the new Parish Year, the 10th Anniversary of the  9 - 11 terrorist attacks, and on this 90th Birthday of Sacramento Bishop Emeritus Francis Anthony Quinn.  Following my breakfast and a brief rest period, I returned to the Parish Hall, to join the Handicapbles Ministry of the Sacramento Diocese, for the lunch so generously prepared for them as always by the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver, from OLOL, and four other Sacramento area parishes.  I also received a call from Father Oliver Maher in Kilkenny, where he  wrapping up serving in St. Mary's Cathedral since 1998, the past eleven years as ADM, and preparing to become Parish Priest of Urlingford, County Kilkenny, on the Tipperary boundary, on October 16. A well rounded, but chillaxing Sunday of concelebration, conversations, and conviviality, on this solemn day of commemoration and remembrance...........Fr.  Troy

On this 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time, in Liturgical Year A, 2011, we open the start of our new Parish Year, which spans from after Labor Day in September into next June, the period of time annually, when the bulk of parish ministries are carried out.  This 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time and 1st Sunday of the 2011 - 2012 Parish Year, is also uniquely distinguished by being the 10th Anniversary commemoration of the 9 - 11 2001, terrorism tragedy that struck the United States, costing 3,000 innocent American lives, a decade ago today, at the hands of Osama bin Laden, and Al Qaeda.  We join our nation and the world today in remembering those who vanished that day, due to the evil doing of wanton criminals and terrorists.  But today, in the Diocese of Sacramento and the Archdiocese of San Francisco, it is also a day of rejoicing, as we celebrate with Bishop Emeritus + Francis Anthony Quinn, his 90th Birthday.  Born on September 11, 1921, in Los Angeles; he continues after 65 years of priestly and episcopal ministry. to serve, share, and inspire, peoples of all Faiths, with his humble service of God and others.  Here at OLOL Parish in addition to celebrating these three focuses, we are also being joined at the 10:30 a.m. Mass, by the diocesan Handicapables Ministry, and hosting them to a wonderful luncheon, cooked and prepared as it has been for the past forty years by the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver,(KPC) of OLOL.....Pray ! Worship !!  Minister !!!  As You Fulfill Your Fidelity To Discipleship In Jesus The Christ,   Fr.  Troy

161 YEARS AGO TODAY CALIFORNIA BECAME THE 31ST STATE OF OUR AMERICAN UNION...........

In the chronology of the 50 States of the Union, that currently comprise the United States of American, California, the Golden State, number 31st, as it was on September 9, 1850, within a year and a half of the discovery of gold, and the Gold Rush it set off, that California was admitted into the Union, as the 31st State of these United States.  Two weeks ago our missionary appeal priest, Rev. Fr. Tony Wall, O.P., spoke of how it was Rev. Fr. Peter Anderson, O.P., who celebrated the first Catholic Mass in Sacramento in 1850, and how amongst those in attendance was Peter Burnett, a convert to Catholicism from Oregon, who became the first Governor of the State of California.  And of course, three quarters of a century prior to our admittance into the Union as an American State, Rev. Fr. Junipero Serra, O.F.M., and the Franciscans, founded the California Missions, which were built a day's walk apart from each other. From the outset of the visits of the Portuguese and Spanish explorers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to the founding of the State, and throughout the Golden State's history, Catholic-Christianity has played a significant role, and has always been an undeniable presence in the lives of of our citizens.   The Diocese of Sacramento's founding Bishop, the Most Rev. Patrick Manogue, a native of Reisk, Ballycallan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, and a miner himself , during the Gold Rush, had the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, built at 11th and K Streets, in downtown Sacramento, and dedicated it debt free, in 1889; thanks to monies from his friends and fellow miners, forty years earlier.  And it's location was fortutitous, as it resides just one block from the State Capitol grounds.  The 161 year History of the Golden State of California, is replete, with such illustrations of how have co-existed and complemented the story of California, for the common good of our citizens.  On this Admission Day 2011, may the commitment and dedication we show, as citizens and as disciples, continue to grow and flourish the best interests of CALIFORNIA, USA...........Fr.  Troy

ST. PETER CLAVER PLAYS A SPECIAL ROLE IN OLOL PARISH, AS THE PATRON OF THE KNIGHTS AND LADIES OF KPC...........

A decade ago, I first learned of the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter, that are a parish ministry here at OLOL, when I became Chairman of the Sacramento Diocesan Food Bowl.  At that time, the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver,  KPC, provided a weekly feeding ministry in the parish known as St. Peter Claver's Kitchen. Today, they have been succeeded by the Feed The Hungry parish ministry, but they also continue to make an ongoing contribution to the betterment of OLOL community of believers.  This Sunday, KPC will be preparing and serving a delicious home cooked meal for the, "Handicapables", a diocesan ministry for the disable, that meets monthly in different parishes of the Sacramento Diocese, for Sunday Mass and a Luncheon, provided by the parish hosting the day.  The Handicapables have been coming to OLOL annually for nearly forty years, and the KPC are the cooks for the luncheon they are served.  Currently KPC, is also actively involved in OLOL's Parish-wide Parking Lot Sale, to be held on Saturday September 17, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., here at the church.  LOn this their patronal feast day, I salute them and wish them well, as they continue making a concrete contribution to the unity in community of OLOL Parish...........Fr.  Troy

DR. MARTIN EXTENDS MY VANCOMYCIN ANTIBIOTIC INFUSION THERAPY FOR 2 WEEKS ONCE THE PICC LINE IS RE-INSERTED...........

My 9:30 a.m. appointment with Dr. Randy Martin this morning showed my labs drawn on Tuesday morning, came back within the desired range.  He has issued an order to have my picc line re-inserted and for my Vancomycin antibiotic therapy to continue for two more weeks.  Should the next set of labs warrant it, he will trade out the Vanco, for another antibiotic, for an additional two weeks infusion.  It at long last seems the window of required antibiotic infusion treatments, is closing, as I progress forward, in finetuning my continuing rehab physical therapy and resuming standing and walking again.  The remaining pain in my pelvic region and left thigh, is lessening, yet still requiring some daily pain reliever, in part to be in the wheelchair, or on the bed, and not being as mobile as I am needing to be.  It has been three weeks since my in home health pt concluded and I am still awaiting resumption of my weekly pt appointments with my external physical therapist, Quinn McArthur.  A follow-up call to his scheduler, Caterina is next on my list, as reactivating therapy is very essential at this time...........Pushing Forward !!!!!!!!!!! LITURGICALLY FEASTING ON THE BIRTHDAY OF THE BLESSED MOTHER...........

In the Catholic-Christian Faith Tradition, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is calendared on December 8.  The Immaculate Conception adhering to our faith belief, that God conceived the Virgin Mary of Nazareth, preserved free from the stain of sin, to be the Mother of His Son Made Man.  The natural human gestation period is nine months.  Thus today we celebrate the Birth of the Virgin Mary, who was chosen and consecrated to be the Blessed Mother of Jesus The Christ.  As I prepare to head to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for my appointment with Dr. Martin, I am praying today not only for the parishioners of OLOL in Sacramento / Del Paso Heights / Rio Linda / Elverta / Robla / , but remembering and lifting up the people of Oroville, and St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, where I was appointed Pastor on September 8, 1994, after spending eighteen months as Pastor in St. Joseph's Parish, in Yreka.  May our commemoration of the Virgin Mary, as our Blessed Mother, bring us her powerful intercession and maternal love, as we strive to fulfill our Discipleship of the One she bore into the World, God's Redeeming and Reconciling Son, Jesus the Christ, Our Lord And Savior...........Fr.  Troy

STILL NO DRIVER VOLUNTEER FOR TOMORROW MORNING'S APPOINTMENT AND I CAN'T MISS THIS ONE...........

As of 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, I have no driver yet for my appointment with Dr. Martin at Sutter Roseville, tomorrow morning.  Again, here I am with hours to go, struggling to secure a ride, which once again seems to have become my plight.  I ask you, if you can to please help me keep this appointment, which I cannot miss, as my return of my picc line and resumption of my antibiotic infusion therapy is part of the reason I am scheduled to see Dr. Martin.  Who among you, who count in the hundreds, if not the thousands, is willing to help me get there ???????????...........Fr.  Troy

A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES DEBATE AND AN ADDRESS BY THE PRESIDENT BEFORE CONGRESS.....WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL THEY MAKE TO JOBS CREATION IN THE USA ???????????...........

The current field of eight Republican  contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination wil meet tonight at a debate co-sponsored by MSNBC and Politico, will be broadcast tonight and will provide those interested in the viewing audience with an insight into the the plans and proposals they have for addressing the American economy and to address the unemployment crises and job creation.  Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who until three weeks ago, was the frontrunner in the field, proposed his own plan for creating jobs on Tuesday, and it will be a focal point of his debate performance tonight, and likely the target for rebuttal and attack from Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachman, winner of the Ames, Iowa Straw Poll, last month; and the new surging frontrunner, Governor Rick Perry of Texas.  It will be Governor Perry's first national debate appearance, and will indicate whether he can hold his own in a structured, multi-candidate, debate format, versus a rally / speech style setting.  Also, whether he can make his points cogently and without alienating discernible segments of the audience and potential electorate, beyond the dyed in the wool Republican base.  Thursday evening President Obama will deliver an address before a joint session of Congress outlining
his proposals for a jobs creation plan to be sent to Congress for passage.  The President with the 2012 Election already underway, has perhaps, this one last opportunity to effectively respond and shape a viable response to bringing down the current 9.1 percent national unemployment rate and make substantial inroads to creating jobs.  Whether President Obama's jobs plan can pass the current Congress, or becomes his political blueprint for re-election next year, is as of now uncertain.  What difference tonight's Republican candidates' debate, or tomorrow's Presidential address will have on increasing employment and jobs prospects of increasingly frustrated and desperate Americans, beset by the ongoing challenges they face due to the affects of the worldwide economic recession that began three years ago, is yet to be seen.  What we can say going into them, is they will provide a doorway to the ongoing debate the next fourteen months of the American experience...........Fr.  Troy

TUESDAY TAKES ON A MONDAY HUE...........

Mondays are always rip popping, days of weekly activity in parish life, as getting the week started, and sorting out the pastoral and administrative direction of the week, is required of most pastors, in an orderly addressing of parish needs and responsibilities.  Have a three day weekend, and Tuesdays take on that role, as it has today for me.  Before leaving for my 9 a.m. blood labs, I did my usual Tuesday morning work, preparing Sunday Bulletin copy.  Upon my return to the rectory after having breakfast, I turned to the desk work awaiting me, sorting out and addressing ministerial details.  Getting ready for tonight's meeting of the the Parish-wide Parking Lot Sale Coordinating Committee, as we finalize and prepare for the day of this first annual fundraising event, on Saturday September 17th; and contending with a rather prickly parish ministry situation, being chief among the responsibilities, for the common good of OLOL Parish as a whole, being required of me today.  My pastoral and administrative focus, as a priest of Jesus Christ, and a pastor of the Church, has been, is, and will always be, bringing and keeping the parishes I am assigned to minister to, in full compliance with Gospel Values, and the canonical procedures and diocesan policies, we are wedded to adhere to as a Community of Believers and the People of God.  Whenever an individual or select group of persons put themselves first and or seek to control the ministry, or the administration of the parish, contrary to the common good of the all the members, or seeking to marginalize or pre-empt the properly and canonically appointed Pastor; I am all the more resolved to see that propriety prevails, and the wayward is brought to appropriate resolution.  This is what I mean when I say, "Priesthood is not a Popularity contest".  It is instead a, "Prophetic Responsibility to Serve God's Greater Glory, by Ministering to the Common God of the entire Community of Believers".  As President Harry S. Truman, so aptly stated, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen"...........Fr.  Troy

AN EARLY BLOOD LABS START TO THIS TUESDAY...........ANOTHER PARISH-WIDE PARKING LOT SALE MEETING TONIGHT...........

My good friend Ted Dahlberg, from St. Rose's Parish in South Sacramento,  came to pick me up and take me to my blood labs for the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Bhat, and Dr. Martin at 9 a.m.  They were fasting labs, so I eagerly awaited my return to the rectory and a late breakfast.  Preparing and organizing for tonight's Parish-wide Parking Lot Sale Meeting tonight is on my agenda today.  More to share as the day unfolds...........Fr.  Troy

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND AFFIRM THE DIGNITY OF AMERICAN WORKERS AND HUMAN LABOR- ON THIS LABOR DAY USA 2011 ???????????...........

On this Labor Day USA 2011, as we celebrate a Monday holiday, with picnics, barbeques, parties, or parades, at home, in the park, at the beach, and all but ring down the curtain on the Summer season, relaxation and enjoyment are the focuses of the day for most of our citizens.  But the reason for this particular holiday is to acknowledge and affirm the human labor of American workers.  The dignity of each and every human person, and provision they do, and seek to do, in the work of our nation, and for the provision of their families, are the focal points deeply steeped in the American experience of the observance of this day for more than one hundred and twenty years now.   With the success of the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th Century,  and the depths of mass manufacturing it brought to the United States.  The traditional headquarters location of the Labor Day celebration is in Detriot, Michigan, home of the American automotive industry, Ford, General Motors, Chrysler.  As we continue to combat the ravages of the economic recession that took hold worldide nearly four years ago, may the appreciation and value we place upon the jobs we hold, include our support for seeing to it that we do as a nation what we can do to address the far too high unemployment rate, with the promotion of a jobs effort that supersedes politics and the special interests, and puts the common good of all our citizens, first in providing jobs of human labor, that enhance and maintain the dignity of the human person...........In The Prophetic Justice Of Jesus The Christ And Gospel Values,   Fr.  Troy

"THE WORD AMONG US" BIBLICAL MEDITATIONS BOOKLET GO LIKE GANGBUSTERS AT SUNDAY MASSES...........

Perhaps the most popular and widely read publication of monthly Biblical meditations and Scripture themes, in America, is, "The Word Among Us".  One of the premier publications of its kind in the post Vatican II, Catholic Church, it is utilized by a great many Catholic-Christians for both personal, and communal, reading and reflection.  It is used in Bible Study groups, and Scripture Sharing sessions.  From September 29 -December 22, it will be the resource we use at OLOL Parish, to conduct a Thursday afternoon 'Scripture Study', for our parishioners.  Through a special discount arrangement from the publishers, our economically challenged, and struggling, small parish, is able to include a quality resource like, TWAU, in my pastorate's ongoing priority of providing continued, and ongoing, adult faith formation for all our members.  A daytime offering is almost always well received by the elderly, or those home during the day, who have difficulty coming out, or driving at night.  And with space availability in the parish hall, and the church, limited by our already ongoing catechetical and ministry needs, a gathering during the day is easier to arrange.  Sign-ups for the sessions will be held September 18th - 28th, by calling the Parish Office,  to register and reserve a copy of the booklets for October, November, and December, needed to participate.  After those dates, any additional copies of TWAU, will be offered to our Sunday Massgoers for biblical meditation and spiritual reading.  Sixty eight copies, the entire allotment of the September booklet, were sold out before the requests stopped coming this afternoon, following the celebration of our 2 Sunday Masses.  I am optismistic that  twenty, or more, parishioners will attend these twelve weekly sessions of Scripture Study; which in addition to our Faith Seeking Understanding Series, on Preparing for the new Mass texts of the Revised Roman Missal,;  and our newly expanded RCIA / Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Ministry, are a part of my concerted pastoral plan for the renewal and revitalization of our entire parish community; - in readiness for the start of the three year, RENEW International Ministry's  parish pastoral, and spiritual, revitalization experience, which begins here at OLOL, in January.  None of this is new to me.  I discovered as a seminarian that to match the outstanding work the Catholic Church has done for a myriad of centuries with religious education for children, and college students, there is as vital and imperative a need, to do exceedingly well rounded Adult Faith Formation in every parish.  This I have done for the more than two dozen years of my priestly ministry, and now bring and commit to carrying out in OLOL Parish.  In early October, I will conduct the 500th session of adult faith formation I have offered in the ten parishes in which I have ministered as a priest.  I pray many of the OLOL parishioners will continue to take part and that, their lives and our community of believers, will be enriched, by the strengthening of their faith and spirituality...........Offered In The Spirit of God's Greater Glory And The Common Good,   Fr.  Troy

WAY TO GO !!!!!!!!!!! SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS AND COACH SPERBECK...........UP COUNTY KILKENNY CATS AND COACH CODY...........

There have been two fantastic athletic victories this weekend, one for Sacramento, California, and the other for County Kilkenny Ireland.  Both victories by only one point margins.  The Sacramento State Hornets Football Team and Coach Sperbeck,  scored an upset over the Oregon State Ducks, with a last minute, 2 point conversion, Saturday, winning the game 29-28, in overtime.  County Kilkenny Cats, four in a row, All Ireland Hurling Final Champions, until last year, when they were routed by neighboring County Tipperary, who stopped their attempt at a historical 5 All Ireland Hurling Championships, were back at the top of their game today, in a rematch against last year's championship County Tipperary team, and won the All Ireland Hurling Final 2011, 2 Goals and 17 points; (for a total of 20) to 1 Goal and 16 points; (for a total of 19) !!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS  AND KUDOS,  to both the Hornets and the Cats on these magnificent and stunning victories.  Onward Hornets !  Up Kilkenny !  I am a proud alumnus and affiliate of you both...........Fr. Troy   "How Sweet It Is"

THE 23RD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME IS LABOR DAY SUNDAY...........

This first Sunday of September, brings us as Disciples of Jesus The Christ, not only to the final one third of Sundays that comprise the current Calendar Year  2011, and the seventeen Sundays it includes ending December 25th; - but the last dozen Sundays that remain in  Liturgical Year 2011, which extends through November 20th.  This in the 23rd Sunday in the Season of Ordinary Time, in what is Year A, in the liturgical cycle.  Here in the United States of America, it is a federal holiday weekend, in observance of  the dignity of  Human Labor, and of American Workers.  It signals the unofficial end of summer, and the start next week of the new Parish Year of Ministry, as members of the Church, and the Community of Believers, to which we belong.  Last week, as will the week ahead, are excelerating anew, as OLOL, and parishes throughout the country, gear up to effectively and productively set in motion, the necessary and essential ministries of Parish Life.  As we focus here on renewing, reinvigorating, and revitalizing, parish ministries at their core.  Striving to eliminating stagnation and the status quo, same ol', same ol', approach to subsisting, instead of truly growing, and flourishing, the participation of every member in this Community of Believers. That includes not only infusing new blood, and renewed energy, into existing OLOL ministries; but developing, and introducing, new parish ministries to take us forward and continue to be all that we can be, as committed, selfless, truly engaged, members of the Body of Christ, the People Of God, we are as, Church.  I will proceed in blogging today - to address for us as a Community of Believers, in Sacramento / Del Paso Heights / Rio Linda / Elverta / Robla; the activation, affirmation, and admonishment, of the Catholic-Christians residing in these boundaries of, and attending, and / or, OLOL Parish, to unconditionally answer the Call to Prayer, Worship, and Ministry, that authenticates our Faith.  Happy Labor Day Sunday...........See You In Church, Being Church !!!!!!!!!! ,   Fr.  Troy

THE UNOFFICIAL END OF SUMMER HOLIDAY WEEKEND DAY ONE IN THE USA...........

Saturdays, for those who maintain a Monday -Friday work week, is a day to divert, relax, recreate, and socialize.  Summer Saturdays are times for parties, picnics, fun, and games.  In the post World War II era, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, in the United States of America.  So here we are in 2011, A.D., experiencing the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, most Americans enjoying one of our many three day weekends, that consist not just of a normal Friday night, and Saturday, and Sunday day and night, but a bonus day Monday, to celebrate.  Except for those who have to work weekends, including holidays, that means an third night to fraternize, socialize, go out to dinner, or the movies and in Sacramento, see a River Cats baseball game, one last production at the Music Circus, or enjoy a barbeque and swimming party later, as well as earlier.  But as I always proclaim at the start of summer and remind you on holidays, the one thing on this three day Labor weekend, any of us take a vacation from is God, our Faith, and attendance at Church.  Sure you can rationalize or self excuse yourself, but that does not dismiss your Catholic-Christian discipleship opportunity, as well as, the divine and ecclesial command you live under, to be present and participating in Church on the Lord's Day; Labor Day weekend, or otherwise.  Put your need to be at Sunday services, Mass, Communion, or Worship Services in this light.  Think as you are enjoying your holiday weekend and considering blowing off attendance at Church, the thousands, to millions, on the East coast of the USA, just last weekend, who were prevented from being in Church, or hardly aAll of us as nywhere else, due to Hurricane Irene.  All of us as Christians and Americans, can be grateful for the accessibilty, and availability, of having the opportunity this Labor Day weekend to join with the congregation of our choice, to share in the Prayer, Worship, and Ministry, of being Jesus' Church...........Fr.  Troy

YESTERDAY MARKED A YEAR SINCE BELOVED BRAD DAHLBERG PASSED TO ETERNITY...........

One year ago yesterday, one week into the eighteen day vacation Msgr. Kavanagh and yours truly took together, I received a comment on my blog from Chad Buechel, a South Sacramentan, who in his youth, I had trained and coordinated as an altar server at St. Rose's Church, indicating that his fellow altar server, classmate, and friend, Brad Dahlberg, had died, after a ten year struggle with brain cancer.  Chad and Brad were one of the special teams of servers I had the privilege to train and oversee as the parish youth minister.  Both sets of their parents, who were St. Rose parishioners along with me, also became very good friends of mine.  So the sorrow Chad and countless others in South Sacramento, were experiencing, was also evident across the miles in Ireland, by both myself, and Msgr. Kavanagh.  Brad's wonderful parents Irene and Ted Dahlberg, graciously scheduled Brad's Funeral Memorial Mass, after Msgr. and I returned, so that we could concelebrate it.  Yesterday, I was thinking and praying for Brad and the Dahlberg Family, as I was kept busy all day with parish ministry and administration.  What I remember and savor most are the indelible marks, of kindness, sweetness, courage, and perserverance, they have shown me and their circle of family and friends, now and through the years, which has been, and is, exemplary.  In coming days I will schedule a first anniversary of remembrance Mass Intention for Brad's soul, and the consolation of his parents, and loved ones. Brad, my thoughts, prayers, and lasting love and admiration are with you, until the day all of us are reunited in God's Eternal Embrace...........Shine On In The Light Of Everlasting Love Brad,  Alleluia !!!  Amen !!!   Fr.  Troy

LACK OF A RIDE CAUSES ME TO MISS THIS MORNING'S MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS...........

Having no one volunteer to drive me me to my blood labs and appointment with Dr. McMonagle this morning, I attempted to get a taxi ride to the Town and Country Center in Roseville.  Unfortunately a further problem developed.  My taxi man and family are on vacation; and that other, preeminent, cab company that has operated in Sacramento since 1917, stiffed me for the second time in four and a half months, by not showing up at OLOL, to take me to my appointments.  I had no intention in April of patronizing the cab company that stiffed me again, but today's circumstances required.  However, I ended up no better off, and was made to miss both appointments.  The labs I can reschedule early next week,.  However, my essential appointment with Dr. McMonagle, will have to wait upwards of two weeks, as the doctor is out of the office next week.  My continuing frustration is what more I can do to secure  a sufficient available, and willing, number of parishioner and personal friends who I can depend on with a day or two's notice occasionally, to provide me with these rides until, please God I am able to drive myself again.  Posting my scheduling needs seemed to be working since my return to OLOL rectory on July 6th, until today.  I guess the cross I am having to bear also has this inordinate challenge nailed to it.  Finding a better way to guarantee I can keep my medical appointments, still lies in the future, and will divert more of my time finding volunteers...........Can You ?  Will You ?  Say Yes, To Helping Provide Me With Transportation When Needed,   Fr.  Troy

LOOKS LIKE IT WILL HAVE TO BE A TAXI RIDE TO AND FROM THIS MORNING'S MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS...........

As 7:30 a.m. Friday morning is here, I have no takers to my request for a ride to and from my blood labs, and follow-up appointment with Dr. McMonagle this morning.  Thus a $100.00 plus taxi ride for me, is the only alternative I have.  Just when I thought the frustration of covering my transportation needs had crested, I'm back to square one, as no one is seemingly available.  Trying to get done what has to be done, but with the frustration of scrambling for help to cover the ways and means of getting there, while unable to drive myself...........Fr.  Troy

As of 1:45 p.m., on this Thursday September 1, I do not yet have anyone volunterred por confirmed to provide with a ride to and from, the Lab, and Dr. McMonagle's Office, at North Sunrise, off Douglas Boulevard tomorrow morning.  Departure from OLOL rectory between 9 -9:15 a.m., in order to do my lab work while fasting after Mass, and then my 10:15 a.m. appointment with Dr. McMonagle, makes the estimated time to OLOL, to be 11:30-11:45 p.m.  If you are available to drive me tomorrow, please contact me here, or by e-mail, or phone before 9 p.m. tonight...........With Confidence And Trust In Christ, And You, My Dear Friends,   Fr.  Troy

STARTING SEPTEMBER WITH THE FOCUS ON THE TEMPORAL AND PHYSICAL MAINTENANCE OF OLOL PARISH...........

Last night, just after 8 p.m., darkness had descended, a reminder at the end of August, that summer is slipping away, and autumn will be upon us in three weeks.  As September starts, my work as a Pastor, which doubles canonically as Administrator of OLOL Parish will place the majority of my time upon the budgetary temporalities of parish life, for the previous  Fiscal Year 2010 - 2011; as I sign and send the completed Parish Financial Report to the Bishop, and the Diocesan Financial Office.  Our report has been completed in readiness for review and sending since mid August, except for one set of certifiable information, from a parish ministry, that maintains funds, beyond the parish budget, but under the umbrella of the parish.  Getting that information and re-directing having the bank statements sent, for that ministry, like the other two in this catergory are, to the Parish Office, will resolve this day of deadline struggle in the future.  Catholic Christian Stewardship requires me as a priest and pastor, to be accountable in transparency and responsibility, to the Parish, the Diocese, and ultimately to the Judgment Seat of God.  Tonight, I will meet with the newly formed Parish Maintenance Committee.  This group has been convened to direct the carrying out of the physical maintenance of OLOL parish plant.  They will discuss with me the setting of short term, long term, and ongoing maintenance projects.   Many of these maintainence needs, like the serious and costly plumbing problem we experienced last month, have been deferred for many years, due to our historically tight and economically restrictive budget, where monetary matters have always been a challenge.  As the new Parish Year begins in ten days, we will be in the position of wholistically and effectively addressing the pastoral, spiritual, temporal, and physical, aspects of being Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, in northeast Sacramento / Del Paso Heights / Rio Linda / Elverta / Robla / ...........Happy September The Final One Third Of 2011,   Fr.  Troy
