MAYOR BLOOMBERG DECIDES TO ENDORSE PRESIDENT OBAMA FOR RE-ELECTION............
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, of New York City, the political Independent, who is both a former Republican, and Democrat, having decided in recent weeks not to endorse either the Democratic incumbent, or the Republican challenger, for President this year, decided today, five days before the General Election next Tuesday, to endorse President Obama for re-election. Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC's "Hardball", reports that Vice President Joe Biden called Mayor Bloomberg asking for his endorsement. Citing the President's handling of the Hurricane Sandy super storm tragedy; and his position on the issue of Climate Change, Bloomberg tweeted his support for President Obama in a statement saying, "This November vote for a President who will lead on Climate change". Mayor Bloomberg then posted a full memo on Twitter stating in the light of Hurricane Sandy and Climate Change why he is supporting President as the best choice in this election to have as a partner in this work going into the future. Shortage of gasoline; gridlocked transportation; no electricity for hundreds of thousands; forced homelessness & no food as the cold of winter sets in. Somehow, the President has to show he is proactively involved in providing comfort and help to the storm victims. Perception is reality. If he has to continue campaign appearances, he’s also got to show the public and the victims that he and his staff and administration are working around the clock to deal with this disaster. It's a tough one, with just a few days before election day.
WHAT YOU DESCRIBE IS THE CHALLENGE OF BEING A PRESIDENT UNDER PRESSURE GOING INTO THE ELECTION, BUT IT IS ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERSCORE HIS RESPONSIBILITIES AS COMMANDER IN CHIEF. AS PRESIDENT HE HAS A JOB TO DO THAT IF EXECUTED WELL, CAN HELP HIS CANDIDACY, WHILE THE CHALLENGER HAS TO FIND A WAY TO RESPOND THAT IS APPROPRIATE WHILE CAMPAIGNING TO THE FINISH LINE. I THINK THAT IS WHY THE PRESIDENT CAME COMPLETELY OFF THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL FOR 3 DAYS, TO DEVOTE HIS FOCUS AND ENERGIES ON THE HURRICANE AND ITS AFTERMATH. HIS INTERACTION WITH THE RESIDENTS IN NEW JERSEY YESTERDAY, ESPECIALLY THE EMPATHY SHOWN TO THE MARINA OWNER AND HIS INSTRUCTION TO FEMA DIRECTOR FUGATE AND HIS TEAM,AND HIS 15 MINUTE TELEPHONE RESPONSE TIME DIRECTIVE, ARE INTENDED TO ADDRESS AND SHOW SENSITIVITY TO THE ADVERSE CIRCUMSTANCES............tdp
