Reverend Monsignor Gerard Schons, a native of Chicago, Illinois and a priest in the Sacramento Diocese since 1953, and ordained for the Claretian Fathers in October 1947; died Friday night in Elk Grove, at the age of 92. Msgr. Schons taught and served as librarian at Sacramento Catholic high schools, and was was Diocesan Vicar for the Hispanic Apostolate in the 1970's and 1980's. He lived In Residence and celebrated Sunday Masses at All Hallows Parish and St. Rose's from 1953-1979; and continued assisting until well after my poriestly ordination twenty five years ago. Monsignor Schons also served as Pastor of St. Joseph's Parish, Marysville 1981-1982. Funeral arrangements are are being made for a Vigil Service next Sunday and a Funeral Mass next Monday. More details forthcoming............Fr. Troy
May Msgr Schons rest in peace. From my hasty research & recollection, this now makes Fr John Grace, Pastor Emeritus of St Theresa in South Lake Tahoe, the most senior priest in our diocese at 91½ . -bd
ReplyDeleteI BELIEVE YOU ARE CORRECT. THERE ARE NO ORDINANDS BEFORE 1948 NOW LIVING THAT I AM AWARE OF, AND FR. JOHN GRACE, BEING ORDAINED IN 1948, IS THEN THE OLDEST. HE MAY ALSO BE THE ONLY ONE PRESENTLY ABOVE 90. -tdp
