CALIFORNIANS RESPOND OVERWHELMINGLY NEGATIVE TO THE ACTIONS OF THE CSU-BOARD OF TRUSTEES THIS WEEK...........
The lead headline in this morning's Sacramento Bee, reported that State Legislators are seeking to cap the pay of California State University system's Board of Trustees actions last Tuesday by a vote of 23-2, to raise student registration fees in the next academic year by an additional 12%; while simultaneously hiring a new President for the San Diego State University, at an increase $50,000-$100,000.00, more than received by his predecessor. As the first paragraph of the Bee story puts it, Californians throughout the State are, "Seething". At least three legislators are writing and set to propose bills that will cap, or disallow University administrators raises, in years where there are spending cuts or tuition increases. Kudos. May at least one of those bills, or another even stronger, be passed by both Houses of the Legislature and signed into law, by the Governor. The spokesman for the CSU Administration responded to the news with the counter opinion that as as part of their Fiduiciary responsibility for governing the CSU system, it is their right to make these decisions. I unabashedly say to that, If this is the best the current CSU Chancellor, Chairman, and Board of Trustees, is come up with decisions like they did last Tuesday, in this time of economic peril, then they need to step down and let other much more, common sense, citizens of California, take these seats of governance and oversight, who will serve the common good of all Californians. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, and the one other Trustee, empathetic to struggling middle class college students, and unwilling to endorse hypocritical and wrongheaded pay raises, for University Administration, deserve our commendations. Thank You for standing up for the betterment of all Californians...........Fr. Troy David Powers
